Be Hippy

My daughter has become very interested in her peace & justice studies in school, so we recently added a couple of new books to our home library to feed the fire and encourage her to learn more about the iconic peace sign and the hippie culture of the 60's and 70's.

Peace: The Biography of a Symbol is a well written history of the peace sign in the anti-war movement and how it originated in the late 1950's during nuclear disarmament efforts. The book was published by National Geographic and the pages are filled with fantastic photos making it a great addition to any classroom or coffee table!

Both books are both great fun and very interesting indeed, although I should probably note that with over 700 pages of "far out" phrases the Hippie Dictionary does include quite a few definitions that might not be suitable for younger readers, but it's much more than a book about sex and drugs. It's loaded with facts about influential people, important historical events, music, clothing, slang, etc.
